Body Heat
AroView: A neo-noir thriller to savour, upping the sexual ante of the 1944 noir classic (Double Indemnity) that heavily inspired it, with its success inspiring an insatiable wave of erotic thrillers in the 1980s. It was the head-turning feature debut of Kathleen Turner and equally catapulted the stellar career of William Hurt (soon after his debut in ‘Altered States’), while Ted Danson is also terrific in a supporting role.
Set in the pressure-cooker heat of a Florida summer, Hurt plays a two-bit lawyer and lothario whose latest conquest turns out to be more than he bargained for, a bargain that involves offing her corrupt tycoon husband. Sex sells, and the stars sell it very well, but the dialogue provides the crucial foreplay and the plot has more than a few twists to call its own.
