AroView: A devout women of the Jehovah’s Witness faith undergoes a profound personal crisis in this uncompromising arthouse drama from Georgia.
The setting is a remote mountainside village in Georgia, a predominantly Eastern Orthodox Christian country where the Jehovah’s Witness community are ostracised. When they are attacked by an extremist group, Yana, the wife of a Jehovah’s Witness leader a mother of one, struggles to make sense of the chaos around her. Themes of obedience, sacrifice and religious intolerance are examined with a savage grace that has earned glowing comparisons to the best of Michel Haneke and Chantal Akerman.
“There is cruelty here but also tenderness, and hellish images that are followed by glimpses of a terrestrial paradise.” ~Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
