August: Osage County
AroView: Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and other heavy hitters come out swinging in this fierce, sometimes hysterical, screen adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play about a combustible family gathering.
Condensed by the playwright himself from the original three hour running time of the Broadway play, this trims the backstory of supporting characters to focus on Streep’s matriarchal shrew and her relationship with her three variously suffering daughters. Very much in the tradition of the meaty, sweaty family dysfunction ensembles of Eugene O’Neill, Edward Albee and Tennessee Williams, this more than holds its own in that prestigious company, as its awards attest.
“As a faithful filmed record of Letts’ play, one could have scarcely hoped for better.” ~VARIETY
