The Driller Killer
AroView: Somewhat notorious as a ‘video nasty’ of the 80s video boom, this grimy debut from bad boy auteur Abel Ferrara was perhaps misunderstood (like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) on account the fearsome word association of power tools and murder.
Ferrara himself plays an artist who slowly loses his mind living in urban squalor while a punk band bangs away in the downstairs apartment. The unsavoury splatter notwithstanding, this is more interesting as an authentically low-rent piece of NY shock-rock.
“Takes up from the ‘70s grindhouse and precedes the flourishing horror-comedies of the 80s.” ~Film Threat
