Phase IV

1h 24m Horror, Science Fiction, Thriller 1974

AroView: Famed film titles designer Saul Bass’ sole directing credit is for this unique and strange sci-fi feature.

Inspired by H. G. Wells’ short story “Empire of the Ants”, it tells of desert ants who suddenly form a collective intelligence and begin to wage war on the inhabitants. It is up to two scientists and a stray girl they rescue to destroy them.

“It’s a movie that seems to have been designed more than directed, and edited around principles of color and line, rather than around performance or plot. Its perspective is impartial—which is what makes it so discomfiting.” ~ Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, THE A.V. CLUB
