Moon

1h 37m Sci-Fi, Thriller 2009

AroView: Smartly handled science fiction from the offspring of David Bowie (Duncan Jones aka Zowie Bowie), with Sam Rockwell playing the lone occupant of an energy harvesting moon base set in the not-too-distant future.

While Rockwell’s whiny one-man show – save for the requisite robotic assistant (voiced by Kevin Spacey) – may struggle to engender sympathy or genuine interest from the hardened sci-fi viewer, skeptics who perceive this as another inward, existential space odyssey are urged to stick with it, with dir. Jones slowly but surely subverting the clichés of the genre and revealing some clever plot turns amidst predictable cautionary themes. A nicely slanted take on a familiar premise with enough surprises to keep the audience on their toes.
