In Between

1h 43m Drama, LGBTQI 2016

Director Maysaloun Hamoud’s remarkable debut feature is an energetic drama about three strong young Palestinian-Israeli women, sharing a flat in Tel Aviv.

Existing flatmates Leila, a party animal and lawyer from a secular Muslim family, and Salma, a DJ who has yet to come out as a lesbian to her Christian family, are joined by Nour, a conservative Muslim recently moved from to the city. The three outsiders form a strong friendship, supporting each other as they navigate the changing views on womanhood in a traditionally conservative society.

Assured and vibrant, In Between is a first-of-its-kind portrait of the unbearable daily duality of contemporary Israeli women, caught in between their hometown traditions and the modern values of a big city.

“After watching Maysaloun Hamoud’s sparkling, taboo-breaking first feature In Between (Bar Bahar), audiences will have to seriously update their ideas about the lifestyle of Palestinian women in Israel.” ~ Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter.
