AroView: A Memphis pimp (Terrence Howard) tries to break out from his scuzzy, middle-aged existence by persuading an old friend (DJ Qualls) to help craft his rhymes and musical passions into a hitmaking demo.
Veering away from the virtually obligatory violence and sex of many a hip-hop tale, dir. Brewer finds something bleaker and funnier in the more mundane emotional desperations lurking behind African-American musical aspirations. Even if the mix isn’t quite perfect, this has a made-for-adults maturity of vision and a brilliant (Oscar-nominated) performance from Howard.
