Adapted from the comic by Mike Mignola, this concerns a demon baby who is brought to Earth by German scientists in 1944 (in league with Rasputin!) and then raised in secrecy in the US, growing up to become… Ron Perlman. Used as the government’s special weapon against Evil, wherever it lurks, he faces a novel crisis when spectres of the past come a-calling. Translating from page to screen with just the right qualities of imagination and dynamism, this lurches out of focus at moments, but overall carries an irreverent charm all its own.
