Dance First
AroView: An eloquent and under-rated portrait of the revered Irish playwright Samuel Beckett, who reflects on his life after the “catastrophe” of being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969.
The film has received criticism for focusing largely on his personal life instead of his works, but the approach here is all about understanding the man behind the enigma through his past relationships, and also with himself through an imaginary double in a nod to his famous play, Waiting For Godot.
Gabriel Byrne is a perfect fit for these shoes, and the supporting cast, including Aidan Gillen (as James Joyce), Maxine Peake and Sandrine Bonnaire, prove just as enchanting. Highly recommended to fans of philosophical drama.
“Dance First won’t strike a chord with everyone, but it’s also not intended for mainstream appeal, and those who connect with it will do so deeply.” ~Stephen Holland, Screen Rant
