2nd Chance
AroView: One of those documentaries that does much more than it says on the tin, which reads as the story of the guy who invented the concealable bullet-proof vest and stood behind his product by shooting himself 192 times.
It’s a knotty, only-in-America tale of guns and crime, capitalism and corruption, with a compellingly complex hero/villain in the form of Richard Davis at its centre. Ramin Bahrani, director of the excellent drama “99 Homes” takes a leaf out of the Alex Gibney doco playbook in handling a tacky subject with absolute tact, one that ultimately shatters in a way you’d least expect.
“Making a great documentary is half finding the right story, half knowing what to do with it. Ramin Bahrani hits the jackpot on both counts in this slyly entertaining but also morally and emotionally resonant investigation.” ~Lee Marshall, Screen Daily
“2nd Chance stands right up there as a complete portrait of someone we are simultaneously repulsed by and drawn to. As such, it is one of the year’s best documentaries.” ~Andy Howell, Film Threat
