Lost in Translation
AroView: A coolly romantic and engaging tale of a “brief encounter” between two Americans stranded in Tokyo - a movie-star in midlife crisis (Bill Murray) and an isolated young ingénue (Scarlett Johanssen).
Working from her spare yet considered script, dir. Sophia Coppola lets her actors generously fill in the detail while drawing on her flair for aural and visual ambience to tell the story, with the otherworldly culture and metropolis that is Tokyo the perfect compliment.
A low-key two-hander that attracted serious Oscar attention and went on to become the ‘independent’ hit of the year, this confirms Ms. Coppola, along with her debut THE VIRGIN SUICIDES, as perhaps the leading female voice of her generation.
