The Queen

1h 43m Biography, Drama, History 2006

Aroview: A regal Helen Mirren brings command and pathos to the screen as Queen Elizabeth II, an iconic yet closely-guarded world figure whose retreat in the aftermath of Princess Diana’s tragic death is grippingly retold.

Expertly pulls off the delicate task of getting under the skin of famous living persons without caricaturing, and is crucially even-handed in conveying the tensions between the ‘stiff upper lip’ of royal protocol and the liberalism of (Tony Blair’s) modern England. The use of actual footage heightens the poignancy and rounds this off as an altogether unique cinema experience.
